    1. The knowledge is demonstrated through the fact that they know that these events are going on and bring in references. They talk about different historical figures again making them seem more credible. Against Me! avoids goodwill which is the point of the song. Their virtue seems to be feeling strong enough about something to actually do something about the problem.
    2. The relationship the band is trying to create between the actual audience (fanbase) would be inspire the fanbase to be original and stand for what they beliefs. The relationship between the invented audience (authority) is that they are trying to call them and kind of say screw you. The relationship between the future audience (people like us) is that they are trying to say embrace your opinions and stick to your values.
    3. The band is opposed to organized authority. The band aligns with the rebellions that rebel for a reason.
    4. We would say no that for us as a group believe that this song is very similar to a rant. That makes the credibility go down and that the lyrics seemed a little awkward. It sounds like it was written in 5 minutes when they are bored in a class and is just a rant. It seemed shallow and effortless.

  2. 1.
    1. There's a lot of historical references
    2. Tells everyone else they are wrong. They believe they are right and are helping.
    3. ethical in their own eyes.

    2.
    1. anyone listening to their music/ their fans
    2. Liberals
    3. Everyone

    3.
    1. The government/ political system in America.
    2. anarchists

    4.
Not too effective because the people the song is speaking to are liberals and they are not going to agree with the message in the song because it insults basically all of America.

  3. 1. They demonstrate knowledge through facts, historical references.
    2. They are rebellious and their music reflects the opposite of good will. They seem to act with malice.
    3. From their mindset, they are virtuous and fighting for a good cause. They seem to have no virtue from the standpoint of people who oppose their views (the majority).

    1. They are trying to rile up their audience. To either get their attention or get their support.
    2. They are trying to create a group of people who support their rebellion. The invented audience is a group of people who disagree with the norm.
    3. The future audience is the audience that will experience the idea of a movement. The band is trying to establish that they have a goal and supporters, and they’re coming.

    1. They are opposed to strict liberalism. They don’t agree with the societal and political boundaries they reside in.
    2. They believe in anarchism as a philosophy and rebelling. The band doesn’t entirely agree with creating overall chaos, just inciting little rebellions.

    1. They effectively reach their audience and clearly state their intentions. Against Me’s song was released not long after 9/11 and at that time of tension, many people weren’t aligned with the government actions. Therefore there were many people who could easily be swayed by their anarchist goals.

  4. 1. For knowledge, the band brings in many historical references within their lyrics. Goodwill, they seem to oppose the entire idea of goodwill within their strong anarchical beliefs. As for virtue, within the band's beliefs they think they are being moral in that they are fighting for freedom.
    2. Actual audience; their current fans that follow the music, they want their fans to see them as rebellious or pushing the audience. Invented audience, is the "you" that they are trying to reach for and talk to through the song, the relationship is the argumentative reciprocal other side of the "you". Future audience, the next generation who doesn't quite understand the references.
    3. The band is opposed to government as a whole or extreme communism specifically.
The band is aligned with anarchy.
    4. It sounds as though the band is just being extremist and typical punk anarchists rather than making a valid point through their ideals.

  5. 1.1- They bring in various historical allusions that demonstrates their knowledge.
1.2- They have a lack of goodwill. They talk about rebellion, throwing bricks through windows, burning down buildings, ect.
1.3- He talks about how negative virtues should change.
2.1- The actual audience is the "you" in the song. They are directly pointing out the fault in their ideologies and trying to get them to change and accept the anarchist ways.
2.2- The invented audience is both sides, the "you" and the "we". They want the audience to listen to the song and either rally the anarchists or change the liberals to radicals.
2.3- They weren't really looking to connect with a future audience. Anarchists are looking for current solutions and changes and all of the references are directed to the present audience.
3.1- Spineless liberals or people who fit into society
    3.2- Anarchists
4- It is effective in that it gets the point across that they want. Both the you or the we understands the message that they are sending.

  6. 1) -Against Me! demonstrates knowledge by making historical and political references
-they demonstrate goodwill by making their intentions clear and portraying them in a way that makes their approach seem like the best one
-they demonstrate virtue by sticking to their cause/principles and being consistent, persistent, and passionate

    2)
-for the actual audience, the band is reaching their punk audience/the people who normally listen to this type of music
-for the invented audience, the band is trying to inspire and incite fellow anarchists, and provoke the "spineless liberals"
-for the future audience, the band comes across as rebellious, intense and not caring what others think

    3) -the band is opposed to "spineless liberals" and those who favor structure, government, and anything that houses corruption
-the band aligns with other anarchists, punks, and those who generally dislike authority and societal/structural corruption

    4) Against Me! has an effective ethos because they have strong commitment to their cause, and it comes across as inspiring and passionate and provoking to those they are attacking.
