R.R. 11/11
Exigency means the situation to which the rhetor responds; it is that event in the world that demands she speak. Of course, exigencies--events to which persuasion/speech is an appropriate response--not only exist in the world independent of the rhetor, they are also created by the rhetor to justify her linguistic engagement. What is Bailey's stated exigence for this article, and is his article an appropriate response to it? Explain.

The exigency in this piece is the relationship of the morality of the oppressors and the oppressed. He argues that it is not really moral to root for either side, because they both are morally flawed. His response makes sense, especially how he used Kanye's video to explain. The video gives us a visual of this contrast between oppressor and oppressed, as we see both sides do violent things that are not morally sound.
ReplyDeleteBailey says that the problem is that people think that philosophy can't be applied to everyday life. But he says that philosophy is in everyday life is one applies it to situations. He gives us examples of philosophy of music which includes the works of Kayne West. Bailey states the purpose of the essay is to gain a broader understanding of these concepts and how they are prevalent in today's culture.
ReplyDeleteBailey's exigence for this article is that philosophical literature and ideas cannot be applied to modern society's every day life. I think he's trying to give an example of how philosophy can be applied to modern society, proving it through analyzing a Kanye west song and music video, which is an appropriate response.
ReplyDeleteBailey's goal is to address the importance of philosophy. He explains why it is relevant and how it is involved in real life matters through musical examples. His response uses modern day artists Kanye and Jay-Z to describe the instinctive and emotional quips in the songs. And in turn he uses that description to exemplify modern use of philosophical ideals. Overall, this article is very persuasive and definitely achieves his intended goal.
ReplyDeleteBailey's stated exigence is (possibly) that shit happens, such as war or conflict, but beauty can be created out of it through outlets. His article is an appropriate response to it because of the way he describes Kanye's album as a work of art and how it came from such a dark place.
ReplyDeleteBailey thinks that philosophy often doesn't have real life application and wants to show how philosophical ideas can be used to explain or give more meaning to why things happen or how they happen. He uses philosophy to show how Kanye and Jay Z's song is more meaningful then it seems. I think his article is a good response to this because he uses philosophical ideas to further explain the songs.
ReplyDeleteHe states that his article is to take Nietzsche's works and look at Kanye West's music video "No Church in the Wild" from that perspective. He looks at the music video this way, but it ends up becoming a talk about society and how things are in the real world. He took one topic that he made up and put it to a real world topic all while talking about a music video. So I feel it is an appropriate response.
ReplyDeleteThe problem Bailey states he is responding to is that philosophy can easily devolve into abstraction because there are few examples of how philosophy can be applied to today's everyday life. Therefore, he claims that the goal of his article is to demonstrate the ways in which philosophy can be applied to something in order to get a better understanding of it. He applies the philosophical Nietzschean concepts to Kanye's and Jay Z's music video in response. I believe that he does give an appropriate response to the stated exigence with this example.
ReplyDeleteWhat I got from the article is that Bailey's exigence is using philosophy to discuss the deeper meaning of something. I think the article is an appropriate response to it because he's showing us you can do it by actually doing it. What I mean is he is using a philosophical approach to analyze Kanye West and the deeper meaning in his work.

ReplyDeleteBailey's purpose for writing this article is to use philosophical concepts to gain a greater understanding of something else in the world. Yes, I do think his article is an appropriate response. He discusses wordly and spiritual concepts and how they relate to the music video for "No Church in the Wild." He combines the use of philosophical ideas and what is happening in the video to discuss humanity.
ReplyDeleteBailey's stated exigence is how philosophical concepts can be used to gain a better understanding of something. In this case the uses the Neitzschean perspective to explain the work of Kanye West, more specifically on the music video "No Church in the Wild". His article is an appropriate response to it because it delves into the meaning behind the visual aspects and underlying themes of the song.
ReplyDeleteBailey's stated exigence for this article is to demonstrate the ways philosophical concepts can be applied in order to understand something better. He says that music videos are one of the most "familiar" things in pop culture so he uses Kayne West as an example to this. I think this article is an appropriate response to his exigence because he analyzes the video and explains the concepts that relate to culture and worldly events.
ReplyDeleteBailey's stated exigence for this article is to analyze Kanye West's and Jay Z's music video in terms of how it relates to the Dionysian and Apollonian. The Dionysian being the feelings associated with the music, and the Apollonian being the intellectual meaning associated with it. Music videos combine lyrics, music, and a visual aspect to allow for all of these meanings to be presented.
ReplyDeleteBailey's exigence is stated in the very first sentence of the passage. He says that the main issue with philosophy is that it easily becomes way to abstract. His response is to talk about philosophy in a very concrete sense as to how it applies to Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild."
ReplyDeleteIn Bailey's article, he discusses much about how society interacts with itself, and how reliant we all are on each other. His point towards the end of the piece was that we cling to others to essentially stay sane while we lose ourselves. When he describes KAnye's album, he targets Kanye's theme of losing sanity and becoming one with the rest of the world and/or society.
ReplyDeleteBailey says that there is a problem in how people think of philsophers and their philsophies and that people believe that it doesnt appl y to everyday life but here he shows that the philosophies of Nietzche can be applied to Kanye West's music video for "No Church In The Wild". His article is an appropriate response because it shows evidence from the lyrics and the video.
ReplyDeleteTo me, it seems like the exigence for his article is just answering the question, "What's the point of philosophy?" He even says that very few every day things in life can be used to talk about philosophy so I am not sure what event in the world sparked his writing. Without real work application I'm not sure that his response is appropriate.
ReplyDeleteI think that Bailey is trying to make a point about Kanye West and why he writes his music the way he does. He compares it to Appollo and Dionysus. The main line that he keeps bringing up is "What's a God to a nonbeleiver?"
ReplyDeleteBailey's staged exigence is the philosophical side that Kanye West evokes upon the incorporation of both apollo-eque and dionysus-esque elements that create a clash of heaven and hell; noting that philosophy is still relevant in modern day.
ReplyDeleteBailey states that the problem with philosophy is the fact that it is easily devolved into abstraction. He states that one way to combat this is to get a broader view or understanding of something.

ReplyDeleteBailey's exigency is that philisophy can be applied to everyday life, such as somthing as simple as a music video. He discusses the accepted belief that African Americans cannot inhibit the "Apollo realm," and therefore are looked down upon as the lesser race, unable to embrace the totality of life. His article talks about how blacks are said to only inhibit Dionysis, which is the physical world, and all the pleasures of life. Therefore, they are feared by others as being purely physical beings without the ability for deep, rational thought.
ReplyDeleteBailey's exigence for the article is to use philosophy in everyday life and apply it in several ways. He uses Kanye West and even describes the nihilistic views that Nietzche was so often accused of viewing the world as, especiallly in his analysis of the Kanye video "No Church in the Wild."
